Garage Doors and Maintenance: Keep Your Door in Great Shape

When I bought my first home, I knew I was going to have to start maintaining different parts of the home to keep everything functioning properly. However, what I did not realize was that the garage door was one of these things. I decided to create this website because I had no idea how much maintenance a garage door needed and what types of maintenance. If you aren't cleaning your garage door tracks, checking for loose screws or oiling the tracks on a bi-monthly basis, I hope my website teaches you how to do this maintenance and the importance of performing it.

How To Install A Garage Door Opener When You Have An Access Door To The Garage Attic

Blog

Many large garages have an attic for storage--or what is commonly called a "mother-in-law" room. The access doors to these spaces are in the ceiling of your garage, putting it very close to, if not directly in the way of, your open garage door. If you plan on putting in an electric garage door opener but your access door to the garage attic is in the way, you have only a few solutions to remedy this situation.

Construct a New Attic Door

You could hire a contractor to construct a new attic door for your garage. They can place the new access door to the left or right of the garage door instead of in the path of the garage door. Then the contractor would seal off or remove the old access door, allowing you to easily install a garage door and not worry about how or where you are going to install it.

Install the Garage Door Opener in Front of the Access Door

If your garage attic access door is a little too close to the front of the garage door, you are out of luck as far as installing a garage door opener. However, if the access door is about midway between the garage door and the back of the garage, you may be able to install the opener in front of the access door. Keep in mind that you may not be able to open the garage door all the way when positioning your opener in this manner.

Rebuild and Remodel Your Garage Entirely

Unless you have money to burn, this may not be the option for you. However, if you want more room in your garage and more storage space in the attic above, then this is the perfect solution to installing a garage door opener and working around the attic access door. As with moving the access door to another area of the garage, you will have to hire a contractor to design and build your new garage and remove the old one.

Hiring a Contractor That Knows Garage Doors

You could go one of two ways here:

  1. Hire a handyman service for one of the less expensive and smaller scale solutions for the garage door opener, or
  2. Hire a contractor that does both construction and garage doors to build you an entirely new garage

Both can help you achieve your goal of adding an electric garage door opener without losing storage space in your garage. For more information, contact a business such as Shank Door.
