Garage Doors and Maintenance: Keep Your Door in Great Shape

When I bought my first home, I knew I was going to have to start maintaining different parts of the home to keep everything functioning properly. However, what I did not realize was that the garage door was one of these things. I decided to create this website because I had no idea how much maintenance a garage door needed and what types of maintenance. If you aren't cleaning your garage door tracks, checking for loose screws or oiling the tracks on a bi-monthly basis, I hope my website teaches you how to do this maintenance and the importance of performing it.

3 Type Of Repairs That Your Garage Door May Need

Blog

If you have an automatic garage door, you may be well aware that there will come a day when it needs to be repaired. With so many moving parts, it just makes sense that at some point one of those parts is going to break. Here are some common types of repairs that your garage door may need in the future.

Damaged Springs

Garage doors use springs that are put under a lot of tension to help the door open and close. These springs are rated for how many times they can be used before they eventually fail. That's because it's a matter of when, not if, a garage door spring will reach the end of its life span and be unable to do its job. A garage door spring replacement is something that is best left to a professional due to how dangerous it can be. The spring is put under a lot of tension when installed, and doing it incorrectly could result in a very major injury.

Damaged Panels

Your garage door is typically made up of several panels that allow the door to roll up into the ceiling so that it's out of the way. One of these panels may become damaged and need to be replaced. This could happen from an inexperienced driver in your home hitting the panel and causing a dent, or it could be from impact damage due to debris flying at the door during a big storm.

The process of replacing a panel is pretty easy, but you may have a hard time tracking down the exact panel that you need. A professional can help identify the kind of garage door panel that is broken, contact the manufacturer, order the panel, and then help install it for you.

Worn-Down Rollers

There are multiple rollers that are installed along the tracks that help the garage door slide up and down. As you may imagine, these rollers can become worn down over time and require replacement. Damaged rollers are one of the easier items to replace as long as you can figure out how to get the rollers detached and out from the tracks. Usually, there is a small portion of the track that you can bend that allows it to slide in and out. If you don't want to bend the track, then you'll need to disassemble more of the door to safely get the old rollers out and slide the new ones in.
